Chihiro Iwasaki
Chihiro Iwasaki is a leading Japanese artist and illustrator, who passed away in the mid 70’s. Through generations and until now, her works are loved.
The models of her illustrations were always pretty children. She unusually drew adults only for illustrations of Japanese classical stories and Andersen’s fairy stories. If you remember, I introduced her in my previous article titled, “Origami and Crane“, where I expressed how she has, for me, pursued the beauty of Japan in the illustrations of “The Crane of Gratitude”.
いわさきちひろと日本人の美的感覚
いわさきちひろは40年以上前に没した日本を代表する画家であり、絵本作家です。今もなお彼女の作品は世代を超えて愛されています。
彼女の絵のモデルはいつもかわいい子どもたちでした。その中で珍しく大人を描いたのは、日本昔話かアンデルセン童話の挿絵くらいのもの。だから、”Origami and Crane” で紹介した『鶴の恩返し』の挿絵は、ちひろ作品にしては珍しく日本の美を追求している気がします。
Bokeh
Chihiro’s illustrations are very Japanese.
She expressed characters with graduations of color and bleeding of ink, not clearly drawing the outlines, except the eyes.
Chihiro invented a unique style of subtle expression by mixing techniques from Western watercolor painting with those from Japanese and Chinese traditional India ink painting. This delicate and flowing style represents an essential quality in Chihiro’s work.

It corresponds to the photography technique, “Bokeh”. Bokeh, which is a Japanese term, literally translated as “blur”, is a technique where the user purposely defocuses the lens slightly to create a soft, borderless aesthetic in a picture.
It is said that there was originally no need for this technology abroad. However, camera manufacturers and cameramen pursued the beauty of Bokeh since Japan’s technique of camera lens for Bokeh is excellent.
When I asked a professional cameraman why Japanese camera manufacturers were popular in the world, he answered, “Because of the low-price for its quality and excellent Bokeh technique”.
I think one of the unique Japanese aesthetics is Bokeh.
It is sad for me to not often see the handwritten brushwork for soft-focus in Japanese picture books recently, since most illustrators use computer to draw pictures.
Chihiro Iwasaki used to draw children using the soft-focus technique. There is no doubt that she was a genius for putting the beauty of Japan into Western watercolor painting.

ボケ技法
彼女の絵のタッチは実に日本的。
彼女は瞳をくっきり描く以外、輪郭をはっきりさせず、インクのにじみと色の濃淡で人物を表現しました。
そう、これはカメラ技法の “Bokeh (ボケ)” に通じます。”ボケ” は日本語です。レンズによって焦点の背景や手前のピントを外す撮影方法です。
もともと海外にはこの技術は不要だったようですが、日本のカメラレンズはボケ技術が秀逸で、カメラメーカーやカメラマンはボケの美を追求してきました。
プロカメラマンに「なぜ日本のカメラメーカーが世界で人気なのか？」と尋ねたら、「値段の安さ。そしてボケが優れているから」と答えました。日本独特の美的感覚のひとつがボケなのでしょう。
最近はパソコンを使って絵を描くことが多くなったせいか、手描きによるソフトフォーカス画風を最近の日本の絵本でほとんど見かけなくなったことが残念です。
いわさきちひろは、ソフトフォーカスを用いつつ子どもたちを描きました。間違いなく、彼女は日本の美を西洋の水彩画に落とし込んだ天才でありました。
