Twelve-layered ceremonial kimono: Juni-hitoe

“Juni-hitoe” is the special clothing and formal dress that only very high ranked ladies and daughters in the court, like empress, princess, wives of court officers and high ranked servants could wear. It started to appear around the 10th century in the Heian Period (794-1185). They wore it in special ceremony or when they saw someone in higher rank.

It is different from the kimonos worn by ordinary people. The skirt has an extended train that trails behind when walking.
When wearing it, the hairstyle is “suberakashi”: gathered at the neck to hang down the back, and a Japanese fan “Hiohgi” is held in the hands.

By the way, Hina-doll’s costume is the Juni-hitoe.

The truth of Juni-hitoe

Literally translated, Juni-hitoe means “twelve-layer robe”. However, I have heard that twelve-layer means “many” and the truth is “many layers of robe”, 10 or less.
The various layers are silk garments, and the total weight could add up to 20 kg.
